DyLynn's House was a Certified Family Child Care Home. The
State of Oregon's Child Care Division as well as the
Multnomah County Health Department provided annual check-in
and certification visits. The facility was licensed for a
total of 6 children per day. The usual number varied from
2-4 until the children were over the age of 2 years. The
State's requirement for children under 2 years is a 1:4
adult to child ratio. Developmental phases, health and
well-being, and my energy level also determined the daily
ratios within the State's guidelines!
The small groups of families that shared DyLynn's House,
began as a same-age cohorts. Every three years or so, we
began with a grouping of children who stayed together in my
care until they transitioned to preschool. Many "alumni"
families continued to use short-term care when hours are
available - it was nice to have a blended age group from
time to time. The older children enjoyed getting to know
the new babies and the toddlers loved to tag along with the
"big kids."
I believe small groups provided opportunities for deeper
and more involved relationships among the children, their
families and their peers. Secure and trusting communities
developed which honored each child's individuality as well
as respected the diversity among us. Annual home visits
furthered in developing my partnership with parents and
other family members. These communities continue to provide
support and friendship for the children and adults alike.
Through a thoughtfully planned physical space and natural
materials, DyLynn's House provided an environment which
fostered in children curiosity, excitement, imagination, a
sense of wonder, autonomy, and a love of learning. Children
naturally developed a sense of themselves as lovable,
loving, empathetic people and empowered them to be capable
and community oriented. By providing wholesome, organic
foods, a slow paced and home-like environment, my program
contributed to the overall health and well-being of each
child.
